Michelle Obama Introduces the Cast of "Hamilton"

In this photograph, taken by Matthew D'Agostino for the White House Historical Association on March 14, 2016, First Lady Michelle Obama speaks at a workshop for local high school students with the cast of Hamilton in the State Dining Room. Present at the event were Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the musical and originated the starring role; Daveed Diggs, who performed as the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the original cast; Christopher Jackson, who originated the role of George Washington, and Phillipa Soo, who originated the role of Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton. Although "Hamilton" premiered on Broadway in 2015, Miranda gave the first public performance of what would become the opening song of the musical during an event at the White House celebrating poetry, music, and the spoken word on May 12, 2009.
